Salsa Meet Up Group

The Salsa Meet Up Group http://www.dcsalsameetup.com/ for the last 2 years has been keeping the salsa scene alive here in DC . On any given night they can roll in 150 deep at a venue. Let's face it if you have 50 people it's a party I don't care where you are. The Meet Up's Organizers Cathy Freeman and Mario Salsa and their Asst organizers do a excellent job of always having somewhere to go dance salsa. They are in general a real friendly bunch who just want to go out and have a good time. The funny thing is they started out not being in any one's clique and ended up forming one of the largest salsa cliques across the country . With over 1800 members they are a salsa force to be reckoned with .

I attended my first Salsa meetup event last night and I was very disappointed that no one asked me to dance. I spent two hours standing on the periphery of the dance floor, crossing my fingers that someone would be friendly enough to ask a newcomer like me to dance, but it was hopeless. It seems everyone knew each other and I felt out of place. Do you have any advice for me? I LOOOVE salsa dancing and I really want to go another meetup, but I'm worried I'll end up not dancing again (and I feel too intimidated to ask men to dance because it seems they all want to dance with the women they've danced with before). Thanks!

SALSA IN WASHINGTON DC ACCORDING TO GOGO EARL said...

Shasmia , the next time you go let me know I will let you know who the orgamizers will be at the event , they will introduce you to more guys than you will want to meet. You will be assured to get dances . Just drop my name GoGo Earl and you will get plenty of dances

I'm sorry about your evening Shasmia. But believe me this has happen to most of us beginners. The secret like Earl said , at least at the begining, is to find the organizer of the meetup event and introduce yourself to him/her and they will make sure that you're introduce to a lot of people who will ask you to dance. With a meetup the size of the 2nd anniversary it is impossible for the organizer to look for all the new members, so make sure you meet either Cathy, Mario, Liz C., or Liz S.. Once people start asking you for dances, you'll wish you can take a break and sit down for a couple of minutes. Welcome to the DC Salsa Meetup Shasmia, and I hope to be able to steal a dance from you sometime. Yves
